A 500-word essay takes about 2 minutes 13 seconds to read silently at 225 words per minute, and about 3½ minutes to read aloud at 140 words per minute.
How words and sentences are counted
A word is any group of letters or numbers separated by spaces, so “don't” and “e-mail” count as one word each, and a standalone dash doesn't count. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark (including Urdu full stops). Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
Different programs count slightly differently — especially around hyphens, numbers and URLs — so a few words' difference from your word processor is normal.
